Woning Van Wassenhove (1972-1974)

Brakelstraat 50
B-9830 Sint-Martens-Latem
arch Juliaan Lampens (BE, b. De Pinte 1926 - )

One of the most radical private homes in Belgium, this house for a bachelor is the epitome of the small but powerful body of work by Juliaan Lampens, one of my personal heroes. This house has only two basic materials that compose the whole interior: exposed concrete and plywood in many declinations. Its style is called sculptural brutalism for a reason. While the use of concrete may have a somewhat austere look at first sight, the warmth of the wood counterbalances it to create a special atmosphere. What really differentiates this house from any other is the natural light which is just enchanting inside. All light bulbs are recessed directly into the concrete ceiling without any visible fixture and ordered in a free pattern.

The house is listed since september 2017 by the Flemish government :

The house is now used as an artist's residence and holiday let under the supervision of the Museum Dhont-Dhaenens

The chaise-longues featured are not original furniture of the house, but re-editions by Maniera of a Lampens design for another house.
